Connecticut Apostille Services

The state of Connecticut, along with its capital Hartford and most populous city, Bridgeport, is located in the northeastern region of the country. Connecticut requests more than 700 apostilles of documents each month.

This high demand reflects Connecticut’s vibrant economy, diverse population, and the state’s significant involvement in international business and legal affairs. Apostille processes ensure that documents issued in Connecticut are recognized in foreign countries. These countries must be members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Here you will find what type of documents you can apostille in the state of Connecticut. You will also find the requirements for both original documents and scanned copies of these.

Which Documents Are Eligible for Apostille in Connecticut?

A variety of documents can obtain an apostille for international use in Connecticut, including:

  • Legal Documents: Includes birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, adoption documents, and court orders.
  • Educational Documents: Documents such as diplomas, transcripts, academic certificates, and educational records are eligible.
  • Commercial Documents: Apostilles can be applied to business contracts, including company registration documents, powers of attorney, and patents.
  • Notarized Documents: Notarized affidavits, acknowledgments, and sworn statements can be authenticated for international validity.
  • Government-Issued Documents: Various permits, licenses, and official approvals issued by Connecticut government agencies can also receive an apostille for use abroad.

It’s important to recognize that the requirements and processes for apostilling documents may differ. This will depend on the document type and the jurisdiction involved. In Connecticut, it is crucial to consult with relevant authorities or professional services. This helps to ensure adherence to both Connecticut’s regulations and those of the target country.

Original Document

You will need to make sure of the following:

  • You have an original document or duplicate issued by the State
  • Appropriate signature is provided
  • Original document was recently issued

The apostille of the original takes anywhere from 4-10 business days.

The Connecticut Secretary of State apostilles public and private documents if the following applies:

  • Were signed by any of the following public officials of the state of Connecticut:
    • Connecticut Notaries Public
    • Town Clerks and their duly appointed assistants and deputies
    • Local Registrars of Vital Statistics and their duly appointed assistants and deputies
    • Clerks, Deputy Clerks, and Assistant Clerks of the Superior Court
    • Judges of the Superior Court
    • Judges of the Probate Court
    • Connecticut Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Public Health
    • Connecticut Registrar and Assistant Registrar of Vital Records
    • Justices of the Peace

Please note:

  • Copies of Public Records can be certified by a public record keeper. For example the Secretary of State or Town Clerk and NOT by Notaries Public.
  • Birth, death, marriage certificates or any other Vital Records can only be certified by Town Clerks, Registrars of Vital Statistics or the Commissioner of Public Health.

Scanned Photocopy of Original Document

You will need to make sure of the following:

  • Appropriate signature is NOT provided
  • Original document is damaged
  • Original document was issued over 10 years ago
  • Destination country ACCEPTS apostilles of the scanned photocopy of the original document; most countries do accept an apostille of the scanned photocopy
  • You need the apostille within 24 hours

Please note:

  • Because the notary and the apostille are required to be issued from the same state, the scanned photocopy of the original document that you provide will be notarized and apostilled in New York City.
