Apostille Your Louisiana Documents

The state of Louisiana, along with its most populous city, New Orleans, is located in the southern region of the country. This state requests more than 200 apostilles of various documents every month.

Here you’ll find what type of documents you can apostille in the state of Louisiana. You will also learn the requirements for both original documents and scanned copies of them.

Which Documents Qualify for Apostille in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, a variety of documents are eligible to receive an apostille for international use, including:

  • Legal Documents: Birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, adoption records, and court orders.
  • Educational Documents: Diplomas, transcripts, academic degrees, and other records issued by educational institutions.
  • Business Documents: Business contracts, corporate registration documents, powers of attorney, and intellectual property records, such as patents.
  • Government-Issued Documents: Permits, licenses, and other official approvals issued by state or local authorities.
  • Notarized Documents: Any notarized papers, including acknowledgments, affidavits, and sworn statements.

The steps and criteria for securing an apostille can differ based on the document type and the specific jurisdiction. In Louisiana, it’s essential to work with the appropriate authorities or a professional service. This is to ensure all steps are completed correctly. Meeting both Louisiana’s guidelines and the requirements of the destination foreign country is crucial.

  • Request your quote through the form.

  • Provide us with the necessary information for your process.

  • Receive your document in the shortest possible time!

Original Document

You will need to make sure of the following:

  • Ensure you have either an original document or a state-issued duplicate
  • The document must bear the correct signature
  • It should be a recently issued document

Obtaining an apostille for the original usually requires 4-10 business days.

The Louisiana Secretary of State apostilles public and private documents if the following applies:

  • Vital records such as birth, marriage and death certificates bear the signature of the Registrar of Vital Records Darlene W. Smith.
  • Other documents are acceptable for an apostille if they were signed by one of the following:

    • Louisiana Notary Public
    • Clerks of the Court
    • Deputy Clerks of the Court
    • Ex-Officio Notary Deputy Sheriffs
    • Judges
    • Justice of the Peace
    • Registrar of Vital Records

Please note:

  • Transcripts and diplomas from colleges or universities can be apostilled if they are signed by an authorized official, such as the registrar, president, or dean, of a state-accredited institution.
  • High school transcripts and diplomas are also acceptable as long as they have been signed by the high school’s superintendent.

Scanned Photocopy of Original Document

You will need to make sure of the following:

  • Appropriate signature is NOT provided
  • Original document is damaged
  • Original document was issued over 10 years ago
  • The destination country must accept apostilles for scanned photocopies of original documents; most countries allow apostilles for scanned copies
  • You need the apostille within 24 hours

Please note:

  • The notary and the apostille must be issued from the same state. Therefore, the scanned photocopy of the original document you provide will be notarized and apostilled in New York City.
