Massachusetts

The state of Massachusetts, along with its capital and most populous city, Boston, is located in the northeast of the country and processes more than 800 apostille requests for documents each month.

Below, you will find information on the types of documents eligible for an apostille in Massachusetts and the requirements for both original and scanned copies.

What Documents Can Be Apostilled in Massachusetts?

If you need to use official documents from Massachusetts in another country, an apostille may be required for international recognition. Various types of documents qualify for apostille certification in Massachusetts, including:

  • Vital and Legal Records: Birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, adoption records, and court orders.
  • Educational Documents: Diplomas, transcripts, degrees, and other academic records from Massachusetts schools and universities.
  • Business Documents: Corporate registration papers, contracts, powers of attorney, and intellectual property records such as trademarks and patents.
  • Government-Issued Documents: Licenses, permits, and other official certifications issued by Massachusetts state or local agencies.
  • Notarized Documents: Affidavits, sworn statements, and other documents authenticated by a certified Massachusetts notary public.

The apostille process and requirements vary based on the type of document and its intended use abroad. Ensuring compliance with Massachusetts regulations—as well as the requirements of the receiving country—is essential for a successful certification.

For guidance and to avoid potential delays, consider consulting an apostille service or the appropriate Massachusetts state office.

  • Documents bearing the signature of the following are also acceptable:

  • A Massachusetts Notary Public

You will need to make sure of the following:

  • Original document is damaged
  • Original document was issued over 10 years ago
  • The destination country allows apostilles on scanned copies of original documents, and most countries accept this form of authentication
